The RS stood for RennSport which, in English, means Race Sport and the Porsche 911 Carrera 2.7 RS was introduced way back in 1972 in Paris and entered production in 1973. Only 1,590 of such cars were painstakingly produced but, interestingly, the first 500 were produced using a thinner gauge glass and metal providing a lighter weight no doubt helping improve performance. In fact, the weight was reduced by about 100lbs.

This car had wider rear wheels, different suspension and arches that were flared thus improving the handling of the Porsche even further. Bigger brakes were provided. The 2.7-liter engine was capable of getting the car to a maximum speed of 150 mph in a very quick time using the 210 brake horsepower.

The 1973 Porsche 911 Carrera 2.7 RS has become a much sought after classic car – especially the lighter model. It is a delight to drive and a pleasure to look at turning many admiring heads. That unmistakable roar of the Porsche engine is unique for a car of its luxurious quality. The road holding is excellent and acceleration capability just fantastic. It really is a driver’s car.

In pristine condition these cars sell for a huge price that has risen significantly over the years. Only a couple of years ago you may have expected to pay in the region of £225,000 for such a car. Now you could pay anything from £500,000 to £600,000 although the lighter weight version may fetch over £1 million.

Not a bad investment return in such a short period of time. So, if you happen to have one of these wonderful classic cars that is in need of a little tender loving restoration work it may well be in your best interest from a financial perspective to spend a little on it to return it to its former glory.
