As the New Year gets underway we thought that you would find it interesting to know the top five classic cars that achieved the highest sale prices throughout 2015 around the world at public auctions. We list them starting with the one achieving the biggest price at auction first.
1. Ferrari 290 MM by Scaglietti – 1956
If you had attended the Driven by Disruption auction run by RM Sotheby’s in December 2015 in New York you would have witnessed the most expensive classic car being sold at a public auction – the Ferrari 290 MM by Scaglietti built in 1956. It went for $28,050,000. It has appeared in numerous races including the Mille Miglia way back in 1956.
2. Ferrari 250 GT SWB California Spider – 1961
A 1961 Ferrari 250 GT SWB California Spider was sold for over $18.000,000 in Paris in February 2015. This particular car was able to achieve such a price yet required restoration work done to it having been discovered in a barn.
3. Ferrari 250 LM – 1964
Yet again another Ferrari! This 1964 Ferrari 250 LM was sold by RM Sotheby’s in August 2015 when it achieved a price of $17,600,000 in Monterey, California. This was a world record for this particular model.
4. Ferrari 250 GT SWB California Spider – 1961
A sale price of $16,830,000 was achieved at an auction in Pebble Beach for this Ferrari 250 GT SWB California Spider that was built in 1961.
5. Ferrari 250 GT SWB Berlinetta Speciale – 1962
This 1962 Ferrari GT SWB Berlinetta Speciale was sold for $16,500,000 at a Pebble Beach auction with this being a world record for this particular model.
As you can see, a range of Ferrari classic cars achieved all of the top 5 spots for the most expensive classic cars sold at public auctions in 2015. It will be interesting to see if Ferrari is going to dominate the classic car sales that take place around the world in 2016 as it did last year.
