Will There Be fewer Classic Cars In Central London?

Quite rightly so, there is concern about the amount of air pollution around the world and it has recently been announced by the Lord Mayor of London that he would like to introduce a further charge called the Emissions Surcharge that would impact on a number of motorists including some classic car drivers that bring their vintage vehicles into central London.

Will some classic car owners have to pay the "T-charge" if they bring their cars into the Congestion Charge Area of London?

Sadiq Khan, Lord Mayor of London, has recently announced that he wants to introduce an Emissions Surcharge for certain vehicles driving in the Congestion Charge Area in London.

The Emissions Surcharge is being called the “T-charge” by people and would be payable by those motorists that bring vehicles with pre-Euro 4 emission standards into the Congestion Charge area in central London. Broadly speaking this means many vehicles that were registered before 2005.

The “T-charge” may cost in the region of £10 and could be introduced as early as 2017. A consultation process is currently underway.

It would appear that this new charge, if introduced, could impact on many classic car owners who drive their classic vehicles into the Congestion Charge area. This would be an additional charge on top of the Congestion Charge resulting in further expense for many motorists.

Although anything that can be done to lower carbon emissions in our capital city is to be welcomed there will be some people of the opinion that this is another motoring expense that they could do without. It could mean that there will be fewer classic cars being seen in the centre of London and this may disappoint a number of people. There are no doubt a lot of people that love to see an old classic car being driven through central London.

It will be interesting to see what is decided once the consultation process has been fully completed. If the new charge is introduced then it may well result in fewer classic car owners bringing their cherished vehicles into the centre of London. We will keep our classic car readers adviced about this matter over the next few months.
