Many of you who are enthusiastic classic car owners would probably love to own a vintage Ferrari. The problem is there are not many people who can afford to buy one as they often fetch huge prices at auction.
Well, that is just what has happened at a recent auction at Sotheby’s in New York, USA. In fact, a Ferrari has just been sold at that auction for a world record price.
For those of you who are familiar with classic Ferrari’s, it will probably not come as too much of a surprise to read that the vehicle in question is a 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO and it sold for a staggering £42 million. Needless to say it is an extremely rare vehicle. In fact, only 34 of this elegant looking sports car were manufactured making it one of the rarest vehicles on the planet.
The car took part in a Le Mans 24 hour race which no doubts adds to its valuation as there are not many sports cars that have done such a thing.
The only car to have sold for more than that at an auction is a 1955 Mercedes Benz 300SLR Uhlenhaut Coupe. It was sold for a staggering £115 million.
There are no doubt very few people in the world who could afford to purchase such a classic vehicle. It is to be hoped that it is going to be well looked after. It would be great if the new owner took the vehicle out for a spin on a lovely, sunny afternoon rather than just leaving the vehicle hidden away in a garage. Who knows, it may also be taken to a few exclusive classic car shows.
The cost of insuring such an expensive classic car will probably be huge but presumably if the new owner can afford to pay £42 million for the vehicle he or she can comfortably mange to pay the premium.
