Ford Escort RS Cosworth Sells For Record Price

Many of you will be old enough to remember the Ford Escort RS Cosworth that was capable of reaching speeds of over 140mph coming with fantastic acceleration resulting in a jaw dropping trip if you happened to be on a racing circuit in one of these sports cars. Well, who would have thought that such a vehicle was capable of one day being sold for in excess of £200,000?

That is exactly what has happened at the recent Classic Motor Show that took place at the NEC, Birmingham. The exquisite classic sports car was eventually sold for £202,500. Apparently, there were two potential buyers left who were both keen on the vehicle.

The car in question was a 1992 Ford Escort RS Cosworth Lux with Diamond White bodywork. There were only just over 2,500 of these vehicles built. This one has only had two owners. Presumably one of the reasons that it achieved what is believed to be a world record sale price is its very, very low mileage. It only has 2,221 miles on the clock. Furthermore the MOT certificate issued back in 1996 showed a mileage of a mere 2,218 meaning that in the last 27 years or so it has hardly been driven.

If you bought such a car back in 1992 the approximate sale price brand new approximately £22,000 to £23,000. Its guide price at the above show was £80,000 to £100,000. We are sure that you will agree it has turned out to be a wonderful investment from a financial point of view.

The Lux spec came with things like washer jets that were heated, leather inside, heated windscreen, heated mirrors that were also electric, a sunroof that was also electric, windows that were electric and a leather steering wheel. These things may not sound too out of the ordinary when looking at the specs on many new cars nowadays but back in 1992 they were not commonly seen.

There were many other classic cars sold at the above show including a 1995 Ford Escort RS Cosworth Lux. This particular car had just under 29,000 miles on the clock and had only had one previous owner. Its bodywork was in Ford Aubergine that is rare. It was sold for £70,875.

A 1969 Ford Escort Mk1 Twin-Cam was sold for £73,125. It has won a number of championship motor racing events having been owned and driven by Mick Briant who purchased it brand new. He was a British rally driver. In 2017 its ownership changed hands with the vendor spending in the region of £65,000 on this classic rally car.
